Dune: Awakening Beta Players Extracted 8.7 Million Liters of Blood

Dune: Awakening Beta Players Extracted 8.7 Million Liters of Blood in One Weekend

Beta testers were busy surviving, grappling, and dying on Arrakis—and their thirst cost millions of liters in virtual blood.

The spice wasn’t the only thing flowing during last weekend’s Dune: Awakening beta. According to developer Funcom, players extracted a staggering 8,715,331 liters of blood across four intense days of survival gameplay on the planet Arrakis.

That’s enough to fill three Olympic-sized swimming pools—if, that is, those pools were filled with recycled blood from fallen foes and unfortunate wildlife. In Dune: Awakening, blood is water—literally. In the absence of abundant water sources, players must use blood purifiers to convert the life force of others into drinkable moisture.

Thirst and Survival in the Beta

During the beta, players consumed 151,749 liters of water, a figure that pales in comparison to the vast blood reserves extracted. In the context of Dune, however, it’s barely a drop: according to Stilgar in the original novel, Fremen hide more than 38 million decaliters in secret reservoirs—around 150 Olympic-sized pools worth.

Beta Deaths: Sandworms Reign Supreme

Survival was hardly guaranteed. Over the weekend:

  • 107,959 players were swallowed by sandworms

  • 65,000 died of sun exposure and dehydration

  • 10,000 perished in deadly 30-second sandstorms

That’s over 180,000 deaths on Arrakis in just four days.

Combat and Movement: Grappling Hooks and Knee Strikes

Of course, not all players were victims. Many fought back—some excessively. Here are more beta highlights:

  • 9.9 million scavengers were eliminated, fueling the blood economy

  • 1.7 million turrets deployed, courtesy of the Mentat ability

  • 2.6 million Swordmaster knee charges launched in melee combat

  • 8.4 million shigawire claw grapples used for climbing, combat, or just pure fun

Funcom’s data shows the grappling hook was the most-used ability—and for good reason. It lets players quickly scale vertical terrain or escape danger with a stylish zip. Whether used for strategy or sheer amusement, it’s become a defining tool of Dune: Awakening’s movement system.

What’s Next for Dune: Awakening?

The survival MMO, developed by Funcom and based on Frank Herbert’s sci-fi universe, is set to launch on June 10, 2025. With its blend of resource management, harsh environments, and PvPvE combat, Dune: Awakening is shaping up to be one of the year’s most ambitious genre entries.

Fans eager to experience Arrakis will find a unique survival loop where even your enemies' blood becomes a lifeline, and sandworms aren’t just lore—they’re literal death traps.
