PS5 Pro Sales Lag Behind PS4 Pro’s Pace in the US

Recent analysis from games industry analyst Mat Piscatella, using Circana data, reveals that US hardware spend on the PS5 Pro has fallen significantly behind that of the PS4 Pro. According to Piscatella, January 2025's spend was 45% lower compared to the same period last year, indicating a notable slowdown in consumer investment in the upgraded console.

Double-Digit Declines Across Major Consoles

Piscatella’s findings point to double-digit percentage declines across all major console platforms. Specifically:

•PS5 Hardware Spend: Down by 38% year-on-year.

•Xbox Series: Experienced a 50% decline.

•Nintendo Switch: Saw a 53% drop, a decline possibly influenced by consumers holding off for the Nintendo Switch 2.

Sony’s Mixed Reporting

Earlier this month, Sony confirmed that total PS5 console sales have reached 75 million units—a figure nearly matching PS4 sales over a similar period. However, Sony did not separate PS5 Pro sales from those of the base PS5. This lack of disaggregated data makes it challenging to determine whether the premium pricing of the PS5 Pro is deterring mid-generation upgrades by players.
 

Market Leaders in Hardware Sales

Despite the reported declines, the PS5 remained the best-selling hardware platform in January 2025, both in terms of units sold and revenue generated. While the Xbox Series trailed behind in spending, the Nintendo Switch managed to edge out Xbox in unit sales. Currently, there is no comparative sales data available for the PS5 in the UK or Europe.
