England Consider Tim Southee as Bowling Consultant for 2025 Test Summer

England Eye Tim Southee for Bowling Consultant Role Ahead of Crucial Test Summer

The retired New Zealand pace legend could bolster England’s coaching setup as key series against India and Australia loom

England are considering former New Zealand paceman Tim Southee for the role of fast-bowling consultant as they prepare for a high-stakes Test summer that includes series against India and Australia.

The 36-year-old, who retired from international cricket in December, is New Zealand’s all-time leading wicket-taker across formats. A close friend of England head coach Brendon McCullum, Southee could become the third Kiwi on England’s coaching staff, joining Jeetan Patel as well.

Southee in the Frame as Anderson Steps Back

England’s previous bowling consultant, James Anderson, has stepped away from the role this season due to his playing commitments with Lancashire. While Anderson was a key dressing room presence following his retirement from Test cricket in 2024, he has signed a one-year playing deal and is currently recovering from a calf injury.

Though he may return in a coaching capacity for the Ashes later this year, Anderson will not be available during the early summer fixtures, leaving England in need of short-term support for its fast-bowling group.

England's Pace Stocks Stretched by Injuries

England’s 2025 Test summer begins with a one-off match against Zimbabwe at Trent Bridge, followed by a five-match home series against India. Injuries to experienced quicks Chris Woakes and Mark Wood have left England with a depleted pace attack.

Right now, Gus Atkinson, with just 11 Test caps, stands as the most experienced fast bowler available. Several others are in line for increased responsibility:

  • Sam Cook (27) – Likely to earn a maiden call-up after being rested from Essex’s recent County Championship match at England’s request.

  • Josh Tongue and Matthew Potts – Expected to be part of the squad announcement at the end of this week.

  • Brydon Carse – Recovering from a foot injury.

  • Jofra Archer – Currently playing in the IPL, Archer could feature in red-ball cricket for the England Lions against India A in June.

McCullum’s Influence and Southee’s Credentials

The potential appointment of Southee would further reflect the imprint of McCullum, who has reshaped England’s red-ball ethos since taking over as head coach. The pair’s close relationship was visible when McCullum made a presentation to Southee in Hamilton following his final Test for New Zealand.

Southee’s transition into coaching would come with considerable experience and leadership pedigree, having captained New Zealand across formats and served as a mentor to younger bowlers in his final years with the Black Caps.

The Road Ahead

England's choice of bowling consultant will play a crucial role in shaping the team’s preparations for two monumental challenges this year—the India series at home and the Ashes away in Australia.

With time short and injuries piling up, England may value Southee's experience, tactical acumen, and existing rapport with McCullum as key assets.
