Liverpool closing in on Frimpong deal as Bayer Leverkusen react to transfer rumours

Surprise Bayer Leverkusen reaction as Jeremie Frimpong to Liverpool links grow

Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Fernando Carro has publicly downplayed speculation linking Jeremie Frimpong with a summer switch to Liverpool, despite mounting reports that the Premier League champions are preparing to trigger the defender’s £30m release clause.

Liverpool eye Frimpong amid Trent exit talk

With increasing speculation that Trent Alexander-Arnold could leave Anfield this summer, Liverpool are actively exploring replacements at right-back. The club’s top target appears to be Frimpong, who has enjoyed a standout season under Xabi Alonso at Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.

According to SPORT, Liverpool have already agreed personal terms with Frimpong, making the process of triggering his £30m clause a likely formality. The clause — reportedly between €35m and €40m — makes Frimpong an attractive prospect given his age, offensive output, and experience in both the Bundesliga and Europe.

Leverkusen play down imminent deal

Despite the growing noise, Leverkusen director Fernando Carro insists that his club has not yet received any formal contact from Liverpool or any other club.

“Jeremie Frimpong has a long contract with us which also has an exit clause,” Carro told sport.de. “But we are currently unaware of any transfer.”

Carro's remarks seem to contradict several reports suggesting that a move to Anfield is imminent, particularly from The Times, which claims that Liverpool are preparing to activate the £30m release clause in the coming days.

Frimpong keen on Liverpool move

Sources close to the player indicate that Frimpong is eager to join Liverpool, viewing the club’s style and ambition as a natural fit. The Dutch international has played a key role in Leverkusen’s unbeaten domestic season, contributing heavily with goals and assists from the wing-back role.

Should the move materialise, it would signal a shift in Liverpool’s tactical setup — potentially moving away from a playmaker full-back like Alexander-Arnold to a more attack-driven outlet on the flank.

Florian Wirtz also on Liverpool radar

Liverpool’s recruitment interest in Leverkusen doesn’t end with Frimpong. Reports also suggest that the Reds have contacted Florian Wirtz, the German playmaker and one of the most coveted talents in Europe. A potential move for Wirtz, however, would be significantly more expensive, with his valuation approaching €150m (£126.3m).

While Manchester City and Bayern Munich are also circling, Carro once again moved to cool speculation.

“The rumours surprised me a bit,” he admitted. “There are always different interested parties... but many of the rumours really surprise me.”

What’s next?

Liverpool are expected to formalise their approach for Frimpong soon. Given the presence of a release clause, Leverkusen would have no power to block the move once the clause is activated. For now, though, the Bundesliga club maintains that no offer has arrived.

Should the Reds finalise the deal, Frimpong would likely become Liverpool’s first major signing of the summer window, potentially ushering in a new era at right-back.
