Police Probe Threats Against Referee Michael Oliver Following Arsenal vs. Wolves Match

Police Investigate Abuse Directed at Premier League Referee Michael Oliver

Authorities are investigating "threats and abuse" targeted at Premier League referee Michael Oliver following Arsenal's match against Wolves on Saturday, according to the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) .

Oliver, widely regarded as one of the league's top referees, issued a red card to Arsenal defender Myles Lewis-Skelly in the 43rd minute after a challenge on Wolves' Matt Doherty. Lewis-Skelly was penalized for catching Doherty above the ankle while breaking up a counter-attack just outside the Wolves' penalty area. The decision was reviewed and upheld by video assistant referee (VAR) Darren England.

In a statement, the PGMOL expressed outrage over the threats:
"We are appalled by the threats and abuse directed at Michael Oliver. No official should endure such treatment, particularly the abhorrent attacks targeting Michael and his family over the past 24 hours."

The organization confirmed that investigations into the incidents have commenced, adding:
"We are providing full support to Michael and all affected parties. This kind of behavior is unacceptable and will be addressed."

During the match, Oliver also sent off Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, shortly before Arsenal secured a 1-0 victory through a goal by Riccardo Calafiori.

Post-match, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta backed the referee's decision, calling it "so obvious that today you don't need my words" during an interview with BBC Match of the Day. However, the red card decision drew criticism from former referees and pundits.

The PGMOL emphasized that such incidents are not isolated, stating:
"Sadly, this is not the first time a match official has faced threats recently. We will continue to support ongoing investigations and take necessary steps to protect officials."
