Verstappen Tops Canadian GP Practice After Leclerc Crash

Verstappen Tops Opening Practice as Leclerc Crashes at Canadian GP

Dramatic Opening Session at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve

The first practice session at the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix began under clear skies but proved treacherous on the notoriously slippery and debris-strewn Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. Charles Leclerc had stamped his authority by leading early on, only to suffer a high-speed off at Turn Three that destroyed the left side of his SF-23 and dropped him down to 10th.

Verstappen Sets the Benchmark

Red Bull’s four-time world champion Max Verstappen finished the session quickest with a lap of 1:13.562, edging out Williams’ Alex Albon by 0.039 seconds and Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz by 0.082 seconds. Verstappen’s performance underlined his consistency this season and gave the Dutchman an early psychological advantage over his rivals .

Ferrari Hit by Leclerc’s First-Practice Off

Leclerc misjudged the entry to the fast right-left chicane at Turn Three, locking his brakes and spearing across the run-off, where he collected the barrier. “I locked up and should have gone straight. I thought I could make the corner but I hit the wall,” he radioed from the cockpit. The incident forced significant front-wing repairs and cut short a session that had promised much for Ferrari after their strong form in Monaco

McLaren’s Difficult Friday and Technical Trials

McLaren arrived with high hopes but struggled for grip in the opening session. Lando Norris ended up 12th after several off-track moments, while championship leader Oscar Piastri managed only 14th. Both drivers ran a new test front wing and updated front suspension aimed at alleviating the ‘numb’ feel in the car’s front axle—a recurring issue for Norris this year
