West Brom target Spurs coach Ryan Mason for manager role despite Europa delay

West Bromwich Albion eye Ryan Mason as next manager, but Spurs’ Europa League run may stall move

Tottenham assistant coach emerges as front-runner for managerial vacancy at The Hawthorns

West Bromwich Albion have identified Tottenham Hotspur assistant Ryan Mason as a prime candidate to become the club’s next manager, according to reports — but the timing of the approach may present a significant obstacle.

Mason, 33, is currently a key figure in Ange Postecoglou’s coaching team, which has helped guide Spurs into a strong position in the Europa League. The north London side defeated Bodo/Glimt 3–1 in the semi-final first leg, putting them on course for a potential final showdown with either Manchester United or Athletic Club on May 21.

A promising young coach with Tottenham roots

Having joined Tottenham’s coaching staff in 2021, Mason has served in multiple capacities, including interim head coach following the departures of both Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte. His long-standing relationship with the club, both as a former player and now as a coach, has positioned him as a well-regarded figure within English football.

However, his ambitions to transition into full-time management are no secret. Mason reportedly held discussions with Belgian side Anderlecht in 2023, though negotiations ultimately broke down. Now, West Brom have expressed renewed interest in the former midfielder as they search for a new leader after parting ways with Tony Mowbray just three months into his tenure.

Timing complicates West Brom’s pursuit

While West Brom are actively exploring options to fill the vacancy, The Sun reports that Mason’s current involvement with Spurs’ European campaign complicates immediate talks. He is believed to remain fully committed to Tottenham’s ongoing pursuit of silverware and is unlikely to consider new opportunities until the conclusion of their Europa League season.

This may force West Brom to either delay their managerial appointment or explore alternative candidates as they prepare for the next Championship campaign.

From midfield prospect to coaching talent

Mason’s journey to coaching began under difficult circumstances. Once a promising midfielder, he was forced to retire from professional football in 2018 after suffering a life-threatening head injury during a Premier League match against Chelsea in January 2017. The collision with Gary Cahill left him requiring emergency skull surgery, ending his playing career just 13 months later after a stint with Hull City.

Despite the setback, Mason quickly transitioned into coaching and has since developed a reputation as a bright, tactically astute figure on the training ground — one now seen as ready to lead his own team.

If West Brom are to secure Ryan Mason’s services, the club may have to wait until Tottenham's European ambitions are resolved. For now, the Baggies’ search for a new manager remains open-ended — but their interest in one of English football’s rising coaching prospects signals a bold intent for the future.
