Paddy Pimblett Eyes Justin Gaethje Fight, Open to Ilia Topuria Showdown

UFC Contender Paddy Pimblett Targets Gaethje Bout, Open to Topuria Title Clash

Paddy Pimblett’s path to a UFC lightweight title shot is becoming clearer — and the rising English contender already has his sights on two potential high-profile matchups.

Following a career-defining TKO victory over Michael Chandler at UFC 314 in April, Pimblett (23-3) believes a showdown with Justin Gaethje is the most likely option for his next appearance, which he anticipates will be in October. Still, he’s keeping the door wide open for a potential title bout with Ilia Topuria, should the undefeated Spaniard win UFC 317.

A Career-Best Win Sets the Stage

Pimblett's win against Chandler marked his most impressive UFC performance to date. The third-round stoppage earned him a performance of the night bonus and saw him climb to No. 6 in ESPN’s lightweight rankings, vaulting him into the conversation for top contender bouts.

Now, with Ilia Topuria set to challenge Charles Oliveira for the lightweight belt at UFC 317 on June 28 in Las Vegas, Pimblett believes the division’s picture is falling into place — and so is his opportunity.

"More Than Likely" Gaethje in October

Speaking to ESPN, Pimblett outlined his expectations:

“I’m just planning on myself in October. I think it will more than likely be Justin Gaethje because Max [Holloway] and Dustin [Poirier] are fighting, that’s 4 and 5.”

Gaethje (26-5), a former interim lightweight champion, remains one of the most exciting and respected fighters in the UFC. Pimblett acknowledged the American’s fan-favorite status, but didn’t hold back on his confidence:

“Obviously, Justin is a legend. He comes out and he has a scrap. You can’t not like Justin Gaethje… But he’s another one who is coming to the back end of his career, and I really think that I finish him.”

Keeping an Eye on Topuria-Oliveira

Though Pimblett views Gaethje as a likely next opponent, he’s staying tuned to the UFC 317 title fight, where Topuria (16-0) will face former champion Oliveira (35-10). Should Topuria win, Pimblett sees a potential shortcut to gold.

“I’ll be in the arena when Ilia fights Charles. If Ilia wins, I can see him mentioning me so you never know — I could just be like Charles and get a win off fighting Michael Chandler.”

Pimblett believes his popularity and connection with Topuria, who previously expressed interest in facing him, could fast-track a title shot:

“He said himself he wants to fight me just like I want to fight him. I think it’s better for me if Ilia wins… I might not even have to fight again — I’ll more than likely be his first defense if he mentions me after it.”

What Comes Next?

Pimblett’s October timeline gives the lightweight division room to settle, with the results of Topuria vs. Oliveira, and Holloway vs. Poirier likely influencing the rankings.

Whether it’s the war-tested Gaethje or a title clash with Topuria, Pimblett is positioning himself for the biggest year of his UFC career. The 30-year-old has gone from social media sensation to legitimate top contender — and his next step could cement him as a true title threat in one of MMA’s most stacked divisions.
