Leicester City Helicopter Crash Ruled Accidental by Inquest Jury

Leicester City Helicopter Crash Declared Accidental

A coroner has directed a jury to conclude that the tragic helicopter crash outside Leicester City's King Power Stadium in 2018, which claimed five lives, was accidental.

The crash on October 27, 2018, resulted in the deaths of Leicester City chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, Kaveporn Punpare, Nusara Suknamai, pilot Eric Swaffer, and his partner Izabela Roza Lechowicz.

On Monday, coroner Catherine Mason addressed the jury at Leicester's City Hall during the third week of the inquest, describing the event as a "terrible tragedy" and confirming that only an accidental conclusion was legally permissible.

"The helicopter crash was a terrible tragedy that cost the lives of five people," Prof Mason stated. "These were remarkable individuals who were greatly loved and will be terribly missed. This hearing is to explain to the world how they came to die."

The identities and medical causes of death were undisputed. Pathologist Dr. Michael Biggs reported that Ms. Lechowicz died from impact injuries, while the other four victims succumbed to smoke inhalation following the crash.

The jury was instructed to align their findings with the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB), which concluded in September 2023 that the crash was "inevitable" due to a series of mechanical failures, leaving the pilot with minimal options to prevent the tragedy.

The inquest remains ongoing.
