New Jets Coach Glenn, GM Mougey Noncommittal on Rodgers’ Status

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — The New York Jets are embracing change with new leadership in head coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey, and their approach to quarterback Aaron Rodgers reflects this shift.

Introduced Monday, Glenn made it clear that no player, including the future Hall of Famer, is above the team. "This thing is not about Aaron Rodgers, folks. This is about the roster," Glenn stated. "Everybody's under the microscope."

Rodgers, 41, is coming off a rocky 2024 season, throwing 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions for a 5-12 team. Having missed nearly all of 2023 with an Achilles injury, his future with the Jets remains uncertain. Under contract for 2025, Rodgers carries significant financial implications:

  • $35 million option bonus and $23.5 million cap charge if retained.
  • A $49 million dead cap hit if released or retired (spreadable over two years).

Rodgers has expressed openness to a pay cut, but Glenn and Mougey plan to evaluate every option, with Glenn stating, "When it comes to the team, it's always a football decision."

Jets’ QB Dilemma
If the Jets part ways with Rodgers, their alternatives are limited. Backup Tyrod Taylor, 35, saw only 36 snaps in 2024, while rookie Jordan Travis missed the season with an injury. The free agent market offers few viable options.

A New Regime
The Jets hired Glenn, formerly the Detroit Lions' defensive coordinator, before appointing Mougey as GM—a departure from traditional organizational structures. Both report directly to owner Woody Johnson.

Glenn brought passion to his introductory news conference, declaring, "We're the freaking New York Jets and we're built for this s---!" He promised to build a winning culture and bring "magical things" to the franchise.

As the team weighs its options with Rodgers and looks to rebuild, one thing is clear: It’s a new era at One Jets Drive.
