David Coote: Ex-Premier League Referee Apologises for Actions Leading to Dismissal and Comes Out as Gay

David Coote: Former Premier League Referee Reflects on Dismissal and Personal Struggles

David Coote, a former Premier League referee, has publicly apologised for the actions that led to his dismissal by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) in December 2024. In his first interview since the controversy, Coote also came out as gay, sharing the personal battles he faced throughout his career.

The Events Leading to Dismissal
Coote was dismissed for breaching the terms of his employment contract following an investigation into two unverified videos. The first video, widely shared on social media, allegedly showed him making derogatory comments about Liverpool and their former manager, Jürgen Klopp.

A second video appeared to depict Coote snorting a white powder, reportedly during his role as an assistant VAR at Euro 2024. European football's governing body, UEFA, launched an ethics investigation into the matter.

Coote also denied allegations that he discussed issuing a yellow card before a match in October 2019, which the FA is currently investigating.

Coote’s Personal Struggles
In an emotional interview with The Sun, Coote, 42, revealed the difficulties he faced growing up as a gay man. He admitted to turning to drugs during his career due to the pressure of hiding his sexuality.

"I hid my emotions as a young referee and my sexuality as well," Coote said. "It’s a good quality for a referee but a terrible quality for a human being. My struggles with self-esteem and identity led to behaviours I deeply regret."

Coote also shared that he endured significant abuse as a referee and feared revealing his sexuality would intensify the hostility.

Apology and Focus on Mental Health
In a statement provided to Sky Sports News, Coote apologised for his actions and acknowledged the harm caused. "This has been one of the most difficult periods of my life. I take full responsibility for my actions, which fell below what was expected of me."

He expressed gratitude to his family, friends, and colleagues for their support and committed to prioritising his mental health.
